OXFORD STAGE COMPANY

'Dominic Dromgoole’s daringly ambitious stewardship of Oxford Stage Company

has been one of the great success stories of recent years'

Daily Telegraph

The award-winning Oxford Stage Company has been offering the very best in touring drama for over a decade. Based in Oxford, the company is one of the leading national touring companies funded by the Arts Council of England and tours three to four times annually to mid-scale (400-700 seats) presenting and producing theatres across the country.

Originally founded in 1974, the company’s current primary aim is to put writing back at the centre, focusing on neglected and under-valued writers or plays. Under the leadership of Artistic Director, Dominic Dromgoole, Oxford Stage Company has gained an outstanding reputation for combining contemporary classics, new work and revivals of established masterpieces. Committed to producing theatre of the greatest quality, wit and imagination, the company attracts the highest calibre of actors, directors and designers.

The Company's aim is to expand the recognised canon of great plays, sometimes rediscovering neglected plays or writers, sometimes breathing fresh life into works that are guaranteed to get an audience, sometimes presenting adventurous new work, but always ensuring excellent, extraordinary theatre of merit

January 1999 to April 2000 saw the busiest ever period of touring activity in the Company’s history, presenting 55 weeks of performances played to over 80,000 attenders, visiting twenty venues with four productions, and hosting a critically-acclaimed West End season at the Whitehall Theatre, raising the company’s national profile.

The breadth and depth of Oxford Stage Company’s artistic product places it in a unique position among the touring companies. From Somerset Maugham to Caryl Churchill and Trevor Griffiths, from Shakespeare, Coward and Chekhov to new writers, Oxford Stage Company’s body of work allows it to reach different groups of people, both nationally and internationally, attracted by specific productions of plays written by timeless writers.
