THE KING'S THEATRE, SOUTHSEA

History

Of the 110 theatres to be built by Frank Matcham there are only 23 remaining in the country, two of which are in Portsmouth.  The Kings Theatre opened on 30th September, 1907 and plans are already in place to celebrate its centenary in 2007.  By then all the restoration work and refurbishment will be completed and the Grade II listed building will be restored to its former glory.  The theatre was in decline for a number of years until it was purchased by Portsmouth City Council in July 2001.  Since then a Trust has been established to implement the restoration and The Kings Theatre (Southsea) Company Limited, under Managing Director of David Rixon was established to undertake the operation.
