A THOUGHT IN THREE PARTS By Wallace Shawn
Play Description | Production Details | Production Photos (to come) | Quotes (to come) | Theatre Details
Sarah and David return to their hotel room after dinner, but David is still hungry. Bob can't get to sleep in the youth hostel, but neither can Judy, Helen or Dick. Mr. Frivolous is enjoying breakfast alone, until his mind begins to wander.
Wallace Shawn’s A Thought In Three Parts examines the subject of sexual relationships from three very different perspectives - alone, in a couple and in a group. This frank and startling look at sex was first produced by Joint Stock at the ICA in 1977, directed by Max Stafford Clark. At the time it caused great controversy, a vice squad visit, a debate in the House of Lords, and calls for the funding of the ICA to be withdrawn. Twenty five years after its premiere at the ICA, this startling play is presented in a society supposedly more comfortable with sex. Although better known as an actor through his work in films such as Manhattan, The Princess Bride and Clueless, Wallace Shawn is on of America’s most unpredictable, and subversive, playwrights. His plays include Our Late Night (1975), My Dinner with Andre (with Andre Gregory, 1981), Aunt Dan and Lemon (1985), The Fever (1990) and The Designated Mourner (1995). This production of A Thought In Three Parts will be directed by Joseph Hill-Gibbins who was the winner of the James Menzies-Kitchin Memorial Trust Award for Young Theatre Directors 2002.
A Thought In Three Parts takes a look at sex - alone, in a couple and in a group. "It's strange, there's nothing, there isn't anything I wouldn't, I wouldn't, I wouldn't do for pleasure. I'd stick a red hot poker up my ass if I thought I would like it." This play contains sexually explicit material which may not be suitable for under 16s
