Charlotte Brontë's

JANE EYRE

Adapted for the stage and Directed by Sue Pomeroy

Play Description | Production Details | Cast Headshots | Quotes | Tour Details

This thrilling new adaptation by Sue Pomeroy captures the essence of Brontë’s haunting tale and the power and scope of her unique imagination. Designed by Dennis Saunders, the innovative staging and lighting in this production combine with evocative music to create an emotional landscape that is both intimate and universal.

Jane Eyre, Charlotte Brontë’s extraordinary unworldly story of passion and solitude set in the Yorkshire moors, is truly unforgettable. Jane’s fiercely independent spirit, unbroken by the cruelties of her early childhood, finds its soul mate in Rochester. The power and passion of their love should overcome all obstacles but the dark secret of his past casts a shadow on their future.

Margaret Ashcroft

Brian Deacon (Brief Encounter, The Woman in Black) as Rochester, Clare Francis (A View from the Bridge, The Magistrate) as Jane Eyre and Margaret Ashcroft (Lysistrata, The Mousetrap, The Importance of Being Earnest) as Mrs Fairfax lead another exceptional Good Company cast.

Sue Pomeroy has been the Artistic Director of Good Company since its inception in 1986 and has created a company that is well known for adventurous stagings of well loved classics and new work.  Sue has directed extensively in regional theatre and on tour throughout the UK, as well as internationally. Her many productions for Good Company include I Bertolt Brecht (which she also devised), Crowned With Fame, Ear, Nose and Throat, The Entertainer, Wuthering Heights, Samuel Pepys - The Secret Diaries, Hard Times and her own adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. Sue has also conceived, written and directed a new musical based on Saul’s conversion on the road to Damascus, Strange Kind of Hero, while her most recent production for Good Company was her own adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma.

“Good Company is developing an increasingly

good name for its adaptations of literary classics”

London’s Evening Standard

EXCELLENT

It’s a production infused with the spirit of Brontë”

Times Education Supplement

It was an example of master

story-telling at its best.

The complexity of Brontë’s work makes this well-thought

out production all the more compelling and evocative”

Belfast Telegraph

“Height of respect for moors drama.

Justice demands that due regard should be given to

the vitality and vision of Good Company.

Sue Pomeroy has a hard to define quality of respect for

a true classic but yet is still brave and confident enough

to give new dimension to characters of immortality.

Marvellous theatre,

from a refreshingly radical company

who really do scale the heights”

Sheffield Advertiser
