UNITED!

DESPATCHES FROM OLD TRAFFORD

Description | Production Details | Production Photos | Liverpool Daily Post Review | Tour Details

A True Red’s eye-popping journey behind the headlines of the world’s greatest ever football team.

Meredith! Busby! Best! Ferguson! Cantona! Munich! The Treble!

Does the Club of Brotherly Love still exist or has it become a snarling corporate beast??

United! Despatches From Old Trafford highlights the history and characters that have made Manchester United Football Club the national and global phenomenon it is today.  The glory and the tears are all here, from the tragedy of the Munich crash, the arrival of Cantona, the influence of Ferguson and of many other colourful characters - this wonderful new piece of theatre tells it how it is.

United! is a True Red’s account of the behind-the-headline stories of Manchester United Football Club. It celebrates the history - sometimes comic, sometimes tragic - as well as their recent outstanding triumphs.  Richard Kurt talks with humour, passion and commitment not just of his great joys with the Club but also of his fears - and of what the Club might become.  The stories mount of Meredith, Viollet, Crerand, Keane, Busby, Best, Ferguson and Cantona, of Manchester United’s incredible triumph in winning the FA Cup, the Premiership and European Cup in 1999 – all is told through words, jokes, visuals and music. The agony and the ecstasy, the frustration and the anger, but above all the wild passion of a true fan, a True Red, is brought to vivid life.

It is based on the work of Richard Kurt (author, editor and a True Red!) and adapted by Richard Williams and Kieron Smith.  The production is directed by Richard Williams, and is performed by Kieron Smith. The set is designed by Janey Gardiner with sound by Mark Bloxsidge and lighting and projections by Arnim Friess.

This brand new production is produced by Vanessa Ford who, mainly known for quality family theatre such as The Hobbit, is setting her feet on new turf by launching this brand-new play about Britain’s most famous football club.  To find out more about Vanessa Ford and her productions look under The Clients on the homepage.

A great goal in soccer theatre

On the face of it, sending someone who is utterly clue less about the English national game to a theatre piece about football was, surely, a miscalculated risk.

To me a striker is someone who downs his work tools and a midfielder someone in the midst of harvesting a wheatfield.  But Kieron Smith managed to bring a new perspective to my meagre understanding.

His lively, poignant, entertaining and thought-provoking profile of Manchester United from a fan’s perspective would grab the attention of the most unlikely convert.

This was a cleverly constructed, fast-paced one-man show and Smith kept the drama going with wiry action, and comic impersonations.  Only once did the pace flag when it risked turning into a chronological glossary.

But that didn’t last long and the pace rapidly picked up again. United! Despatches From Old Trafford is based on the book by Richard Kurt and has been adapted by Kieron Smith and Richard Williams, who directed.  It scored a great goal in the mind of a confirmed footballing cynic.
