THE PRESS RELEASES
PRESS RELEASE – 21 June 2004
Hampton Court Palace Ice Rink
Supported by GALAXY® Hot Chocolate Drink Saturday 4th December 2004 to Sunday 16th January 2005
Ice skating returns to Hampton Court Palace this winter - 2004
Following the enormous success of last year’s inaugural Christmas Season ice rink in the grounds of historic Hampton Court Palace, Historic Royal Palaces and PWR Events Ltd are delighted to announce that the Hampton Court Palace Ice Rink, supported by GALAXY® Hot Chocolate Drink, will return this December (2004) for another six week season.
Set in the truly splendid and traditional setting within the grounds of Hampton Court Palace the ice rink will again be located on the west front of Henry VIII’s historic red brick palace. The ice rink will be larger than last years, and will measure approximately 900 square metres, but the capacity of 245 per hourly session will remain the same. The Frost Fayre Café alongside the ice rink (no entrance charge) will return serving warming GALAXY® Hot Chocolate Drinks and festive snacks for those wanting to take it easy and relax after their skate or whilst watching others take to the ice. Inside the Palace there will be traditional offerings of costumed events celebrating the 1604 court of King James I and between December 27th and January 1st 2005 the palace’s historic chefs will be cooking up a royal feast in the Tudor Kitchens in front of a huge roaring fire.
At Christmas time in Tudor days, Frost Fayres on the ice of the frozen River Thames were regular events – with the frozen river solid enough to walk from one bank to another, people would take to the ice for fun and games. With the creation of the outdoor ice rink for six weeks this winter visitors to Hampton Court Palace will experience a taste of these historic frost fayres for themselves – a truly memorable festive experience with the famous West Front as a spectacular backdrop.
Booking for the ice-skating sessions (hourly sessions accommodating 245 people) will open by phone and internet from Ticketmaster on Thursday 17 June 2004 or in person at the Hampton Court Palace Box Office. The inaugural season saw sessions at weekends and immediately around Christmas and New Year selling out extremely quickly so advance booking is strongly recommended. Joint tickets offering skating and entry to the historic Hampton Court Palace are also available providing an opportunity to enjoy more of the spectacular Tudor setting – please ask at the time of booking.
PWR Events Ltd is delighted that GALAXY® Hot Chocolate Drink are continuing their support of the event. Chocolate has long been associated with Hampton Court Palace, indeed it is believed that Hampton Court Palace is one of the places where chocolate was first eaten, or rather drunk, in Britain. Initially brought over from Mexico by the Spanish, chocolate was then a rather bitter beverage made from ground cocoa beans and chili, but the chili was soon replaced by sugar and the 1st generation of drinking chocolate, as we know it, was born. This new found beverage was so important that a special area at Hampton Court Palace was named for its drinking – Chocolate Court.
