THE PRESS RELEASES
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 25th October 2002
GOOD COMPANY (BRONTE PRODUCTIONS) presents
CHARLOTTE BRONTE’sJANE EYREAdapted for the stage and Directed by Sue PomeroyDesigned by Dennis Saunders
Following their acclaimed national tour of Jane Austen’s EMMA earlier this year, Good Company’s next premiere is Charlotte Brontë’s classic, JANE EYRE, which will be touring throughout November 2002 – the dates are Winchester, Theatre Royal 5-9 November, Peterborough, Key Theatre 19-23 November and Greenwich Theatre, London 26-30 November. This thrilling new adaptation by Sue Pomeroy captures the essence of Brontë’s haunting tale and the power and scope of her unique imagination. Designed by Dennis Saunders, the innovative staging and lighting in this production combine with evocative music by Simon Slater to create an emotional landscape that is both intimate and universal. Jane Eyre, Charlotte Brontë’s extraordinary unworldly story of passion and solitude set in the Yorkshire moors, is truly unforgettable. Jane’s fiercely independent spirit, unbroken by the cruelties of her early childhood, finds its soul mate in Rochester. The power and passion of their love should overcome all obstacles but the dark secret of his past casts a shadow on their future. The production is presented by Good Company, which is well known for its adventurous stagings of both well loved classics and new work. Charlotte Brontë’s classic novel continues, in all recent book polls, to prove itself to be one of the world's greatest novels by a female writer. The sheer scale of the book, some 650 pages long, is brought to vivid life in this production which will also show how accessible and relevant the tale of Jane Eyre is to modern audiences. Brian Deacon (Peter Greenaway’s A Zed and Two Noughts, Brief Encounter, The Woman in Black) as Rochester, Clare Francis (A View from the Bridge, The Magistrate) as Jane Eyre and Margaret Ashcroft (The Brothers, The Mousetrap, The Importance of Being Earnest) as Mrs Fairfax lead another exceptional Good Company cast. Sue Pomeroy has been the Artistic Director of Good Company since its inception in 1986 and has directed extensively in regional theatre, in London at the Royal National Theatre and on tour throughout the UK, as well as internationally.
