THE PRESS RELEASES
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 11th November 2002 JULIUS GREEN & IAN LENAGAN present
in THE BLUE ROOM Freely adapted from Arthur Schnitzler’s La Ronde by DAVID HARE
The national tour of David Hare’s The Blue Room starring Tracy Shaw and Jason Connery commences on 3 February 2003 with weekly engagements at Cambridge, Richmond, Dartford, Guildford, Lincoln, Cardiff, Eastbourne, Londonderry, Cork, Brighton, Milton Keynes, Edinburgh, Wolverhampton, Stoke, Darlington and Salford (Manchester) through to May 2003. It is directed by Joe Harmston, with design by Simon Scullion, lighting design by Robin Carter and sound design by Ian Horrocks-Taylor.
David Hare’s skilful adaptation of Arthur Schnitzler’s notorious erotic masterpiece La Ronde follows a chain of sexual encounters between an intriguingly diverse selection of characters. When it premiered in Germany in 1921 the play was closed down by the police and the actors arrested and put on trial.
Attitudes to censorship may have changed since then, but human beings, their vulnerability and their need for love have not…
The Blue Room caused a sensation when it opened at the Donmar in 1998, starring Nicole Kidman and directed by Sam Mendes. The production repeated its success when it moved to Broadway later that year. This new production is the play’s first UK no. 1 tour.
Tracy Shaw has been playing the part of Maxine Peacock in Coronation Street since May 1995 and will leave in December 2002. Jason Connery shot to fame in the lead role in Robin of Sherwood and since then has had a successful career in both film and television. His parents are the celebrated actors Sean Connery and Diane Cilento.
Sir David Hare’s many plays have been staged throughout the world, though probably his best known are The Blue Room, Plenty and Amy’s View. His latest play Breath Of Life is currently at the Theatre Royal Haymarket, starring Maggie Smith and Judi Dench. He was also Associate Director of the National Theatre from 1984-87.
Tracy Shaw is a keen fan of David Hare’s The Blue Room and said ‘Everybody knows the play for its nudity but it is much more than that - it is an incredible piece of theatre’ while Jason Connery stated ‘I am really excited about coming back to perform in the UK and Ireland, and particularly to take this great David Hare piece on tour so that it can be seen outside London’.
The production is directed by Joe Harmston whose numerous credits include the recent tour of Relative Values starring Susan Hampshire, the Pinter season at the Donmar and Pinter’s The Birthday Party starring Prunella Scales and Timothy West, which toured the UK before transferring to the West End.
